Legal Services Training Reference Group

Report to NLAF - February 2009

Women’s Legal Services, DVAS

  • Recent or upcoming training: DV liaison Officer training; Law Access workers; Sexual Assault Communication Privilege with DPP & private solicitors; DV training with Family Relationship Centre workers at Bathurst and Blacktown to overcome inappropriate referrals.

LJF

  • Running a free seminar on managing the production of DVDs and online videos to assist people with legal problems on the 31st of March aimed at non-profit organisations working with clients with legal problems.

Local courts, AGD

  • Discussed the need for DV training.
  • Ran Working with people with an Intellectual Disability using IDRS. No resources to run more workshops.
  • Victims Services Branch have new product aimed at children
  • Running training for Local Court staff on making appropriate referrals to LawAccess.

Legal Aid NSW

  • Have introduced a Learning Management System (LMS) which will allow staff access to on-line learning opportunities plus enable them to book in directly to courses. CLC, ALS and WDVCAS are expected to have access in April.
  • LANSW is offering 3 places to ALS & CLC managers in the 2009 Diploma of Management being held at UTS TDS.
  • New form listing available courses has been sent out to partner agencies.

CCLCG

  • Online CLSIS training available via WebEx
  • Ran the following training for CLC staff: Aggressive Clients; Lobbying For Funding: Mental health Awareness Training with PIAC; Community Legal Education train the trainer in conjunction with the Tenants’ Union.
  • Currently formatting for the Induction kit for CLCs

Collaborative opportunities identified

  • Local courts to discuss possible DV training with Women’s Legal Services
  • Legal Aid NSW to investigate possibility of running the IDRS intellectual disability awareness training based on positive feedback on this training from local courts
  • Combined Group of Community Legal Centres to investigate the possibility of running additional community legal education training to allow other agencies such as Legal Aid to attend
  • Legal Aid to investigate the possibility of working with community legal centres to develop content for the online learning component of the Learning Management System
  • Local Courts are part of a national courts initiative examining online learning. Legal Aid will demonstrate their learning management system to them to assist with this process.
